Important Biosecurity and Customs Information for International Competitors

Welcome to Australia and Western Australia! As you plan your trip, it’s essential to be aware of the strict customs and biosecurity regulations in place to protect our unique environment, agriculture, and wildlife. Compliance with these regulations ensures a smooth entry process and helps preserve the natural beauty that makes Australia special.

Entry into Australia – Customs and Quarantine
Australia has rigorous customs and biosecurity rules that apply to all travelers. You will be provided with an Incoming Passenger Card by your airline or cruise line before arriving. It is crucial to fill this card out accurately and declare any items that may pose a biosecurity risk.

What You Must Declare:

  • Food, animal products, and plant material: This includes fruit, vegetables, seeds, meat, and wooden articles (especially sports cleats, golf shoes, or other equipment).
  • Sporting equipment: Ensure all equipment, including disc golf bags, footwear, and any outdoor gear, is thoroughly cleaned and free of soil, seeds, or plant material.

Failure to declare these items can result in severe penalties, including:

  • Fines of up to $6,260,
  • Civil penalties, or criminal prosecution,
  • Cancellation of your visa, with refusal of entry into Australia and a potential ban for up to three years.

For more information on Australia’s biosecurity regulations, visit the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry website.

To Ensure a Faster Border Clearance:

  • Avoid carrying fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, seeds, and animal or wood products.
  • Ensure that your footwear, sporting, and recreational equipment (e.g., disc golf bag, carts, prams) are dry and free of soil, seeds, or grass.

Western Australia Biosecurity Guidelines
In addition to Australia-wide regulations, Western Australia enforces strict biosecurity measures due to its unique biodiversity. Here are a few things to keep in mind when entering the state:

What You Need to Declare:

  • Soil, plants, seeds, and animal products: Even clean-looking items can carry harmful pests and diseases.
  • Sporting Equipment: As in the national guidelines, all outdoor sports gear, including disc golf equipment, must be free from dirt and plant material.

On Arrival:

  • You will be required to declare any biosecurity risk items on your Incoming Passenger Card.
  • Risk items will be inspected by a biosecurity officer and may be subjected to treatment, export, or destruction if deemed necessary.

Failure to declare items or providing misleading information can result in penalties or fines. It’s crucial to follow the instructions of biosecurity officers to ensure compliance.

Climate

Mundaring, located in the Perth Hills, enjoys a Mediterranean climate in November, which is ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, disc golf, and cycling. November is characterized by warm, sunny days and cool, pleasant evenings, making it perfect for exploring the natural beauty of the region. Daytime temperatures typically range between 23°C (73.4°F) and 28°C (82.4°F), with occasional sea breezes providing relief from the heat, and nighttime temperatures drop to around 15°C (59°F), offering cooler evenings.

Though November usually sees minimal rainfall, it’s always advisable to be prepared for sudden changes in weather, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors. The hills and forests can also feel cooler in the evening, so having layers for early mornings and late evenings is recommended. It is recommended that participants pack water-proof shoes and some light rainwear as a ‘just in case’. The shows will be especially helpful for early morning games and dew, better to be prepared than have soggy feet!

You can get up to date weather and conditions via Western Australia Forecasts (bom.gov.au)
